Homeschool Family Day

We are offering community conversations and activities for the adults, and will have separate children’s activities. Our goal is to share with you some of the best parts of our approach to nature mentoring. There will be a break for a potluck lunch, and we will close the day all together – kids and adults. This a free opportunity for anyone in the homeschool community. Please sign up via our website so we know how many are coming and can prepare accordingly. Also, we invite you to help us spread the word about this free community day with other homeschool families you know.

Fall 2013 Earth Mentors Homeschool Session

Ages 7 – 16 (divided into separate age groups)
$130 ($120 for PWC Members)

Our homeschool programs offer a selection of earth-focused experiences that allow students to engage in hands-on, experiential learning led by skilled naturalist mentors. There are two programs described below, one for an older age range and one for a younger age range. These programs overlap in ages (5-8 and 7-16), so students may choose the program that best suits their needs.  Registration deadline is two weeks prior to the start date.

Take Your Child Outside week runs annually from September 24 to September 30. The week is an initiative of the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences with the goal of “helping children across the country develop a better understanding and appreciation of the environment in which they live.”  Each day will bring a new activity for all ages at the Arboretum. Come for one day or every day of the week!

Leaf Rubbings

Name that Tree! Stop by the Visitor Center and pick up your guide to some of our favorite trees in the Arboretum. Then take a stroll out into the gardens to see how many you can find. Just make sure to return the guide to the Visitor Center when you are done!

Garden Bingo. Stop by the Visitor Center and pick up your bingo card. Grab your eagle eyes and your card and search the gardens for as many things as you can to get 5 in a row. Then shout Bingo! as loud as you can to celebrate!

Explore the gardens while you search for five scavenger hunt questions. Try to guess the answers before you reach the end of the trail. You’ll be amazed at how much exercise you can get in a garden! Start your quest by picking up a map (if you need one) at the Visitor Center.

Seed Balls

Spend the morning making seed balls. Seed balls are a great way to add color from wildflowers to a bare spot in your yard. All materials needed will be provided, and participants will take home seed balls.

Always wondered what the trees in your yard are, but can’t tell the difference between an oak and a pine? Then this is the program for you! We’ll learn how to use a dichotomous key then walk around the park to practice identifying some common species.

There are more kinds of moths than there are butterflies, yet butterflies get all the attention. This night program will give moths the ‘spotlight.’ We’ll focus on identifying moths as well as ways to attract them to your backyard so you can know which ones live there.

Pullen Park’s Discovery Days is a new series aimed at pre-school and elementary aged children. The series will run through September and October and features a variety of performers from throughout the area.

There is no admission fee for the shows. Parent supervision is required – this is not a drop off program. All programs begin at 10:30am and last approximately 45 minutes.

American Wildlife Refuge: Birds of Prey
Join us to hear about Eagles, Hawks and Owls in our area. Meet some live raptors in a wildlife show that gives you up close and personal look at actual birds of prey. Learn how YOU can help these magnificent birds at a show that is fun for the whole family.

Basic backyard birds will be the focus as we talk about their different colors and songs. In addition, kids will have the opportunity to see and touch examples of nests, eggs and feathers.

Explore the amazing diversity of reptile lifestyles and characteristics. Discover many similarities and differences between reptiles and other animals groups including humans. Help your child overcome fears and demystify reptiles as they meet some fascinating live examples.

Wake Audubon: All About Hawks
Get an up close view of a stuffed adult hawk! Children will get to see the sharp beak, talons and beautiful feathers while learning how hawks live. Children will build their own hawk nest and learn how mom and dad hawks take care of their eggs and baby birds.

Mad Science: Spooky Science
Hear the tales of Count Eggbert and Countess Eggberta as they battle the wicked witch. See things melt, foam, and bubble!

Seed Science
This program is a great way for your child to explore the diversity of seeds. Through discussion and games, they will learn where the seed is found on the plant, how seeds are dispersed and explore the parts of the seed.

Prairie Ridge is proud to announce a new, free, program for young children.

Starting August 22nd, you and your young children are invited to participate in a nature-themed story and activity!  Meet other families in your community and enjoy the outdoors during these fun-filled programs at the Prairie Ridge amphitheater.

No registration required, but children must be accompanied by an adult.

Meet at the outdoor amphitheater at Prairie Ridge; follow “Nature Stories” signs from front entrance.  Be sure to dress for the weather and wear closed-toe shoes for this program. The program is conducted on natural surface trails, rugged strollers or packs are recommended for younger children.
