Join volunteers around the globe and help clean the world’s waterways. Teams will pick up trash along the shore of Lake Crabtree and its connecting creeks. Gloves, bags and other supplies are provided by the park. We’ll raffle off prizes and learn why it’s important to educate others about litter. Individuals and groups are welcome. Creepy Crabtree

This free, park-wide event will investigate the darker side of nature. Learn about bats, snakes, spiders and other ‘creepy-crawlies’ with unfortunate and undeserved reputations. You can make dreadful decorations or creepy crafts, go on a scary scavenger hunt, listen to spooky stories and tour our park in the dark during a haunted hike. Join us in celebrating the night and come in costume if you like. Come anytime for some family fun; no registration or sign up necessary for the main event, but please preregister for one of our night hikes (7:15–8:45 p.m.). Please specify which hike you prefer when you register.

We are offering community conversations and activities for the adults, and will have separate children’s activities. Our goal is to share with you some of the best parts of our approach to nature mentoring. There will be a break for a potluck lunch, and we will close the day all together – kids and adults. This a free opportunity for anyone in the homeschool community. Please sign up via our website so we know how many are coming and can prepare accordingly. Also, we invite you to help us spread the word about this free community day with other homeschool families you know.

Our homeschool programs offer a selection of earth-focused experiences that allow students to engage in hands-on, experiential learning led by skilled naturalist mentors. There are two programs described below, one for an older age range and one for a younger age range. These programs overlap in ages (5-8 and 7-16), so students may choose the program that best suits their needs.  Registration deadline is two weeks prior to the start date.

Prairie Ridge is proud to announce a new, free, program for young children.

Starting August 22nd, you and your young children are invited to participate in a nature-themed story and activity!  Meet other families in your community and enjoy the outdoors during these fun-filled programs at the Prairie Ridge amphitheater.

No registration required, but children must be accompanied by an adult.

Meet at the outdoor amphitheater at Prairie Ridge; follow “Nature Stories” signs from front entrance.  Be sure to dress for the weather and wear closed-toe shoes for this program. The program is conducted on natural surface trails, rugged strollers or packs are recommended for younger children.

(Campers staying for the full day are eligible for a free supervised lunch period.) 

  • Blast It! Teams work their way through the physics of flight with Stomp Rockets and water powered bottle rockets.
  • Catapult It! Campers test the physics of projectile motion as they build and test catapults designed to hit targets at varying distances.
  • Engineer It! Teams learn the engineering principles behind constructing structures made from various materials as they experiment with bridges and towers.
  • Fly It! Campers explore the physics of flight as they work their way through paper or blasa planes and gliders.
  • Solve It! Campers gather evidence and learn how to process it with chemistry and sound scientific practices in order to solve a mystery.
  • Plant It! Campers learn about nature, identifying local trees and insects, and create their own living ecosystem in a bottle.
  • Proteggct It! Campers learn about the physical properties of various materials as they design and build devices to protect eggs from breaking when dropped from increasing heights.
  • Live It! Campers learn about the organ systems in their own bodies, as well as the nutrition that keeps them fueled.
