Family Fun Saturday: All That Glitters

Artists in medieval times sometimes used sheets of gold pounded thinner than paper to adorn their work. In this workshop you’ll see the delicate process of applying gold leaf to a painting and then create your own “golden” masterpiece.

Gallery tour plus studio workshops for families. Kids and adults delight in exploring the Museum’s collection, creating projects together, and discovering one another’s creativity. Open-air cinema has been a popular NCMA tradition for over 20 years. Our summer series features recent Oscar winners, family favorites, and timeless classics. Occasionally we program special Music/Movie Combos that combine a live performance with a film screening.

Gates open 90 minutes before screenings, and patrons often arrive early to enjoy a picnic with family and friends. Movie concessions are available for purchase, and beer and wine are sold before and during most shows.

Join a Museum guide for a lively discussion and activities in the galleries. Each free tour lasts 30 minutes and is designed for kids age 5 to 10 and their adult companions. Themes change monthly, so be sure to visit often. Meet at the West Building Information Desk. No reservations are necessary, but space is limited.

Summer Arts Adventures: A kaleidoscope of fun and adventure. Students will explore a variety of arts media, techniques and topics each session. Music – Sertoma Raleigh Children’s Orchestra

The Raleigh Children’s Orchestra is a multilevel string orchestra for students in grades 1-7, who have played for 6 months or more. The orchestra provides a rare opportunity for young players to rehearse and perform in an orchestra setting. Each semester begins anew with the learning of new pieces of music, culminating in a free public concert for friends and family. Students provide their own instruments, music stand, and 3 ring binder. Director: Ilse Mann.

Performing Arts – Sertoma Musical Theatre Production

In this two-week course, participants will build skills in acting, singing, and dance. Students will also delve into musical theatre production practices as they produce and are cast in ‘Disney’s The Little Mermaid jr.’ Instructor: Cathy Minjkives. Children work with real clay and learn various methods of constructing pottery, such as pinch, coil, and slab to form their own unique creations. Pieces will be glazed during the last class so don’t miss it! Student’s can pick up finished work after course is completed.

Young artists form and sculpt figures or animals, real or mythical from clay. Students are encouraged to use their imaginations to create unique pieces of art. Works are decorated and glazed during the last class and left for firing. Work can be picked up at the Center one week after class has ended. Materials included.

Maps are amazing! They can tell us so many important things about where we live and where we need to go. But maps also have secrets if you can learn how to identify them. Explore historical maps from UNC-Chapel Hill’s Special Collection, make your own map of the mill pond, and then put your newfound knowledge to the test with an orienteering challenge.

Hard times during the Great Depression meant everybody in North Carolina had to find creative ways to make do and get by. Flour, sugar, seeds, animal feed, and many other things came in cloth bags, so many women saved the pretty printed fabric to make curtains, towels, and even clothes or quilts. Share with us all the ways you like to reduce, reuse and recycle and print your own apron to take home.  For ages 5-7; $4/Child (or $10 for 3 LH programs).  Pre-registration is required.

Explore nature through art during this 5-day hands-on camp. The beautiful mill pond provides the perfect setting for creative kids to explore the beauty in nature and to participate in a variety of artistic field explorations.
Yates Mill’s camps offer your child hands-on history and nature activities including tours of the old mill, visits with live animals, hikes, crafts, games, and more. Each day offers a different theme. There will be 2 adult staff with the kids at all times. Kids bring their own lunch. Camp size is limited, so sign up early!
